Steel City Sports Shooting Association was formed in 1964 to provide a safe area for instruction, training and use of firearms. This association has operated for over forty years and has grown from one hundred original members to nearly 500 current members. In early 2002 the property was purchased from United States Steel Corporation by the membership and the name was changed to Brock's Gap Training Center. Brock's Gap is the historic site of the first railroad built to reach a few small iron mills that would one day grow into Birmingham. The entrance to the range passes through rock that was hand cut by slaves for the railroad in the early 1800s and by prisoners during the War Between the States.

Brock's Gap encompasses approximately one hundred and fifteen acres of mature hardwood forest with abundant wildlife and wetlands. The range is currently located near the intersection of South Shades Crest Road and Highway 150 minutes from Interstate 459, between Hoover and Bessemer. The purchase of the property has

ensured the long term survival of the range considering the encroachment of real estate development, government regulations, and environmental factors in today's society. Range facilities at Brock's Gap Training Center offer target shooting from 7 yards to 700 yards with 365 days a year access.  Security is provided by magnetic gate keys.  Currently there are five ranges which can meet your pistol, shotgun or high powered rifle needs. Future projects include a sporting clays range, a 1,000 yard range and   several specialty ranges. Regular NRA sanctioned shooting matches are held at Brock's Gap to provide fellowship and enjoyment to our members and guests.  A schedule of these matches and previous match scores may be viewed on our website at www.scssa.org.  Information and scores can also be found for Practical Pistol, Cowboy Action, High Power, Smallbore Rifle Silhouette, Benchrest, IDPA, Hunter Pistol, Cowboy Lever Action, Smallbore Pistol, Smallbore Rifle and Muzzle Loading Rifle Matches.  Local police agencies use the range for training exercises and firearms instruction. Boy Scouts can earn their shooting sports merit badges at the range. Brock's Gap Training Center is a family oriented organization which provides a safe area for training, instruction and use of firearms.

Safety is priority one at Brock's Gap.  Each new member is required to pass a safety and orientation course before their membership can be approved by the Board. Mandatory Eye Protection and Ear
