SCSSA Master Range Plan

By: The Board of Directors

A Special Meeting of the Board of Directors was called on April 16, 2005 to review the proposed Master Plan for long-term range development and improvement. The Master Plan was approved by the Board as presented with the option to make changes as necessary. In addition, a bid was accepted from a logging company to purchase timber located on the sites of the proposed new ranges and on the extensions to the existing ranges.

The following information will provide an overview of the proposed changes to the property as detailed in the approved Master Plan:

Range "A" No change

Range "B" Range "B" will remain 50 yards deep and the existing terminal berm will remain. A new protected path on the East side of Range "B" will lead to a new area.  This path will be eight feet wide and eight feet deep with ballistic walls for shooting and training in the walkway.  The new "B1" Range will be 50 yards deep, and the same width as the existing Range "B". This proposed area will be dedicated for S.W.A.T. training. The Master Plan calls for a building to be erected in this new area with 360 degree shooting capability. The building will contain moveable partitions allowing for different configurations for training scenarios. This area will be off-limits to the general membership and will only be used for Police training.

Range "C" Range "C" will be extended to 100 meters.  The width will not be changed.

Range "D" Range "D" will be rotated to the west and extended to 200 meters with a 50 foot section extended to 300 meters. The width will not be changed.

Range "E" The existing shooting shed on the 700 yard range will be removed and the area will be used for a Welcome Center. This center will house the bulletin board, a map of the facilities, general information, photos and application and waiver forms. Outside the Welcome Center, flag poles will be located to accommodate a U.S. flag, SCSSA flag, an NRA Flag and the State of Alabama Flag. A new shooting Shed will be constructed with space for twenty competitors. The Range will be 210 feet wide by 600 yards long.

Existing Storage Lot A new storage lot will be made on the North West corner of the property. Everything in the existing storage lot will be moved to the new area. The trailer in the existing lot does not belong to SCSSA and will be removed from the property. The location will be used to construct a new Family Center to include a pavilion with Bar-B-Q pit, children’s play center and picnic tables.

Range "F" A new "F" Range will be constructed for the Action Pistol Matches. The new Range will consist of 14 individual bays, 70 feet wide by 50 feet deep. Two Bays will be covered for shooting in inclement weather. An area to the southwest will be available, if needed, for expansion. Permanent targets will be setup on each range making it easy for members to practice all stages of the match. A building, with 3 open sides and a roof, will be constructed at the opening to the ranges. A room will be on one end for meetings. The building will be large enough to house all the contestants of a Match under one roof for meetings, score reviews and award ceremonies. All IDPA Matches will take place on Range "F." We will determine, at a later date, if a covered shed should be constructed running from the building along the centerline to the end of the range.

Range "F" Parking Lot A parking lot will be constructed in front of Range "F" that will have approximately 50 parking spaces. Overflow parking can use the parking lot in front of Range "C", "G" & "H."

Range "G" A new "G" Range will consist of five new bays 60 feet wide and 150 feet deep.  We anticipate the installation of permanent targets on this Range for Cowboy Action Matches. The permanent targets will allow Members to easily practice as time allows.  The area to the east of Range G has been proposed for Gallery seating to observe the matches.

Range "G" & "H" Parking Lot A parking lot will be constructed north of Ranges "G" and "H" that will have approximately 35 parking places. Overflow parking can use the parking lot for Range "F."

Range "H" A new 1000 yard range will be constructed with berm protection for the ranges and parking lots on the southeast side. A new shooting shed will be constructed on the northeast end. A new road will extend from the shooting shed to the impact area to the southwest. A new target system will be constructed in the impact area. Steel baffles angled at 45 degrees will be above and in front of the shooting positions to prevent any bullets from going over the new berm behind the impact area. If a shooter raises his gun too high and fires, the bullet will impact the steel plates and be deflected into the ground in front of the shooting shed.

Range "I" Range "I" will be an Archery Range 300 feet long and 80 feet wide.  Talks are under way to build a metal building that will be used a Youth training Center.  Indoor shooting with air rifles and a place will be available for an Indoor Archery Range.

Sporting Clays and Competition Archery Ranges In the wooded area to the west of the 1000 yard range, the Plan calls for a Sporting Clays Trail through the woods with designated shooting stations. A Competition Archery area, including 3D Targets, is in the design stage for this area.
Range "J" and "K" Two shotgun Ranges will be constructed near the end of the 1000 yard range. These ranges are still in the planning stages but one could be used for Skeet and one for Trap.
